Stockholm, Sweden — Iranian female activists staged a topless protest targeting the hijab — a head covering that Muslim women are required by their religion to wear.

The activists shed most of their clothes during the protest in Stockholm and painted slogans on their bodies as a way of getting their message across.

The women involved in the topless protest are members of the Iranian Communist Party, as well as the Organization Against Violence on Women in Iran, reports Digital Journal.

The protest was organized in Stockholm on Sunday and dedicated to International Women’s Day, which will be celebrated on March 8. Images from the Iranian activists’ topless protest are on display on FEMEN’s official website.

FEMEN is a “sextremist” activist group notorious for their topless protests around Europe. The group expressed their support to the Iranian activists, adding that “in the historical battle ‘woman v. Islam’ women will win!”

Al Arabiya notes that the activists stripped off their tops and bras and protested with the slogans “My nudity is my protest” and “No to hijab” written on their bodies. They also carried signs showing FEMEN protests. One anti-Islamist Egyptian activist, Alia al-Mahdi, also expressed her support for the protest.

Al-Mahdi angered Egyptians last year when she protested topless against the country’s draft constitution. She appeared in the FEMEN protest in Stockholm with an Egyptian flag. Writings on her body said, “Sharia is not constitution.”

FEMEN is a Ukranian topless movement. They recently teamed up with Al-Mahdi in order to attract attention to “the threat of Islamization of the Egyptian constitution and the introduction of [Mohamed] Morsi’s Shariah Law.”

Al-Mahdi explained that she chose to protest topless “because of the ideas that say we do not own our bodies and that we are public property, as people are the ones who decided what should be done with our bodies.” She added, “Of course, if we want to make change, we have to do it unlike the way it is done.”

The group also demonstrates against sex tourism, international marriage agencies, sexism, religions institutions, and other social issues. The movement is inspiring other women to stand up for their rights by removing their clothes.

Do you think the Iranian activists’ topless protest will help change opinion on the hijab?
